Music & Lyrics: "Wichita Lineman" by Glen Campbell (Wichita Lineman, 1968)

Wichita Lineman
Glen Campbell
Original lyrics by Jimmy Webb

~~*~~

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main roads
Searching in the sun for another overload
I hear you singing in the wires
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

~~*~~
I heard this song for the first time
when I was no older than seven or eight,
and I remember it kicking my ass even then.
The line, 'And I need you more than want you,'
is deeply touching and filled
with profound sadness,
one my young soul perceived even then,
even if it didn't fully understand it.
That's the wonderful thing about truly great songs:
they have the ability to reach anybody.
We just have to listen.
