Music & Lyrics: "Dreams I'll Never See" by Molly Hatchet (Molly Hatchet, 1978)

Dreams I'll Never See

Original lyrics by Gregg Allman

Just one more mornin'
I had to wake up with the blues
Pulled myself outta bed, yeah
Put on my walkin' shoes

Climb up on a hilltop, baby
To see what I could see
The whole world was fallin' down,
Right down in front of me

'Cause I'm hung up on dreams
I'm never gonna see,
Lord help me, babe
Dreams get the best of me

Pull myself together
Gonna put on a new face, yeah
Climb down from the hilltop, baby
Lord, get back in the race

'Cause I got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had
I got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had

'Cause I'm hung up on dreams
I'm never gonna see yet
Lord help me, baby
Dreams get the best of me yet

Pull myself together
Put on a new face, yeah
Climb down from the hilltop, baby
Lord, get back in the race

'Cause I got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had
I've got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had

And I'm hung up, Lord, on dreams
I'm never gonna see yet
Not bad, not bad
Lord help me, baby
Dreams get the best of me yet

It was 1978.
I was about to win a state championship in swimming.
I heard this song before the finals.
It stuck with me instantly.
A teammate, Mike, played it on his 8-track "boombox."

It became one of my life anthems.
I had no idea just how powerfully it would stick with me
through tragedy and the occasional triumph,
through homelessness and abject abandonment,
through sexual assault and even attempted suicide.

I have steadfastly refused to give up on my dreams,
which is the biggest reason I've ended up alone
so much of my life.
Others just didn't have the courage to hang with me.
More to the point,
they didn't have the courage to hang with
their own dreams.
