I Took the Next Step Today to Legally Change My Name

The surname Helbert lost all meaning to me
October 25, 1984, when my mother died.
On my birthday in 1998, I started calling myself
by my preferred--and true--name:

Shawn Michel de Montaigne

A few weeks ago I purchased the
government (herd) forms that would begin
the process of changing my legal name
permanently to my true one.

Today I handed those forms in and paid that fee.

In a few days I'm supposed to call to find out
if a hearing has been scheduled,
or if my true name has, without more hoops,
been approved by the herd.

I'll let you know.

I won the goddamn war.
