Extra notes: One of the best lines I've heard in the series The OA, which Kye and I have begun watching, is when Prairie comments (and I'm paraphrasing): "What does it mean to be well-adjusted in an insane society?"
I think Erich Fromm said it first. It's like a lighthouse for my soul, that question is; and when I feel particularly down about the world, it's almost always the first one I think of.
The evidence for this society's insanity is pervasive and, if you are like me and fighting to be truly sane, unignorable. Look at Trump and the Republican Party. Utter fucking insanity. Look at how billions literally (try to) ignore the apocalytpic signs of global climate change, if not deny them outright. Look at the indifference. Look at the propaganda against the unignorable reality of it.
Fuck--look at Brexit! An entire country is about to self-destruct because it refuses to grow a pair and hold another vote in order to say NO! to the insanity of Brexit and the deep, grotesque dishonesty by which it became real and ultimately voted for. Pure goddamned insanity.
Billions of people don't give a shit that Facebook is literally Big Brothering them--all so that vile megacorporation can make billions of dollars by using them, the people, as the product, while utterly manipulating them, their governments, and their minds. You don't see millions quitting that horrible site, do you, out of protest? No, you don't.
Here in the US, the insanity is reaching peak proportions, and in so many areas--from government to medical services, from infrastructure to science, from education to women's rights to immigration ...--that I frankly can't see how we'll survive it. It seems from where I'm sitting that the people who are willing to fight to restore sanity and decency to the commonwealth are far too few, and the assholes who control it all are far too many and far too well-funded; and the indifferent, whom the assholes depend on to successfully push their agenda, are fucking legion.
Perhaps nothing in this nation, however, is as insane as Christianity. Evangelical Christians, now with "their guy" squatting his fat orange ass in the Oval Office, have literally gone next-level batshit crazy. They've finally opened the fascist closet and strode boldly and proudly out of it; and frankly it scares the living shit out of me.
As it should. As it should for any American who claims to be sane.
Too many people just don't care. And that makes them insane too. Indifference in this day and age is just nuts. You can't be indifferent and sane. You just can't.
But the dominant culture, which is dominant because most people believe in it and support it and defend it, or are content to let it be (indifference), tells me that I'm insane. That folks who think like I do are insane. We are silenced by the Great Mooing, Shuffling, Soulless Herd; and if we get too loud, well, often the result threatens our breathing privileges.
I'm not gonna be a good Nazi, folks. I'm not gonna turn my head. I'm not gonna help the trains run on time.
Most of you will. Most of you do. And so the dominant culture remains profanely, grotesquely insane, and the world burns.
But hey--Survivor is on tonight, and you've got that new app for your phone, and blouses at Target are just $10 this week! Yippeeeeeee!
